Wald 137 Front Bicycle Basket (15 x 10 x 4.75 Silver) – Reviews

I installed the Wald 137 basket to my single speed grocery runner 1977 Takara. The 137 is the smaller of the two shallower baskets. For the price I was surprised by the stability and capacity of the basket. The rack easily supported one bocce set and 5 loose bottles of beer totaling about 22 pounds. I expected the handling to be a bit unstable as the cargo sits high above the wheel, but I had no problems with riding or steering with minimal sway in the basket.

While installing I came across a couple issues. The chrome flaked off causing a painful splinter in my finger. This made me wish I purchased the black version that I could have easily painted – I think I would prefer silver paint to the cheap looking bluish “chrome”. Is it zinc?

Another issue is at the handlebar clamp. The steel strap wants to bend rather than wrap around the handlebar’s circular profile. This is not only an aesthetic issue, but also potentially dangerous as the screw rubs the aluminum handlebar at a point a bit too close to the stem where bending forces are great. To solve this problem I used 3/4″ long nylon spacers that I had from another project – Amazon ID B000FPBU9K.

This basket is sturdy and fits fairly well. I do have to set the handle bar hooks angled up to prevent tire rubbing. Besides that, no complaints.

This basket is great for a long day away from home as it allows you to take some weight off of your back while traveling from place to place! Its a great size and is not difficult to ride with.

The basket turned out to be exactly what I wanted. I didn’t want a huge one that was really bulky, so I went with the 137. It’s a nice size to carry a few things like a bookbag or some stuff from the store. The basket comes with everything you need for a perfect fit and directions. I was happy to see that it came with rubber strips to protect the handlebars from the clamps also. Couple delays happened putting it together but nothing serious. First the UPS guy didn’t get to my house with it until after I went to work, which I knew was going to happen. I work nights at UPS and know how they are with delivering to residential areas. It was disappointing but it was there for me after work. I was pretty tired when I put it on which made it take longer than it should have. Second thing that was a delay was holding the basket up to my bike and noticing the arms were too long. The arms turned out to be fine I just wasn’t looking at it right. The handlebar clamps are moveable, up and down, which when clamped to the handlebars makes the basket sit level. At first I thought they had to be at the 90 degree angle they came out of the box as. Third and final thing I thought was going to be a problem was my quick release front hub. In the directions it cautions to not install on a quick release. I ended up still putting it on and tightening it down nice and tight. Seems like it tightened the wheel to the frame fine. I’m thinking it should stay on, I pulled the wheel as hard as I could and it didn’t move. I’m not saying you should do that but I did. I’ll let you know if it falls off and I wreck my new basket.

You can see what mine looks like by clicking the blue bicycle under the picture on the 137 basket’s page. Overall this is a nice basket, I’m happy with it.
