Trail Gator Trailgator Bicycle Tow Bar (Black) – Reviews
Very nice. Great idea. As long as your child is stable enough to physically stay on their own bike, you can use this. If you’re riding on the street, or a rail-trail, (or up a big hill!), the child’s bike can be attached. Note: if the child doesn’t have their own balance yet, the adult will have to provide additional balance. When you arrive at a park area, you can quickly disconnect (no tools) and let your child ride around on their own. Installation was not difficult. I recommend putting a rag under the clamps to keep from scratching the bikes. The child’s bike gets a bracket mounted to the front of the frame beneath the handlebars. The adult’s bike has a bracket that attaches to the seat post. This could potentially interfere with adjusting your seat height, but shouldn’t be a problem as long as you don’t ride with the seat all the way down. Also, as your child grows and needs a larger bike, you can just move the bracket onto the new bike. When attached, the child’s front wheel will be a few inches off the ground, and handlebars locked (although there is still a little play in them). I recommend removing (or flipping up) any training wheels while the child is riding attached to the adult’s bike. Overall, a very good versatile invention.

If I could give this product a negative rating, I would do so.
The first four times I used the Trail Gator, I would have given it stellar marks. It seemed like a great product, and we were really enjoying our family bike rides. But on our fifth ride, the pin joining the two connector bars worked its way loose, allowing the towed bicycle to pivot, and pitching my 3-year-old face first into the pavement. He was pretty seriously scraped up, and but for the helmet he was wearing, might have been critically wounded.
For the record, I’m an engineer, and I guess I can follow instructions as well as the next guy. This product just outright failed–disastrously.
Amazon should stop carrying this. It is unsafe, and should be taken off the market. In the meantime, please steer clear of this dangerous product!

I have raced both road and mountain bikes, ridden across Europe and much of the southeast US, and have worked in bike shops – why do I state this? To add credibility to this review because I am absolutely in love with this product. I have a 5 year old son that was having some problems learning to ride his bike – I didn’t like the results we were getting with training wheels so I decided to look for bike trailers.
This product is amazing. Installation was simple – I have it mounted to my Kona mountain bike – my son’s bike is a Specialzied Junior track bike (which I also recommend because of the very light weight). We live in the Smokey Mountains in NC and have about 5 acres of hilly pasture land.
I have taken this down extremely steep hills, up extremely steep hills, in heavy field grass (up to 10″ deep), down gravel roads, paved roads, and MTB trails – IT FREAKIN’ ROCKS – my son begs to ride it daily – seroiusly.
We both feel totally safe with this. I am a safety freak and I really put this thing through the paces. It is stable, very well constructed, easy to assemble, and it has great quick release assemblies.
I think there are some negative reviews on this product and from working in bike shops, customer service, and sales I can tell you that there are just some people that will fubar anything they touch – I feel sorry for them – up to a point. Their inability to properly install this or to adequately control a bike is NOT a reason to blame the product. I used to see people come into the bike shop that couldn’t even change a tube or tighten a set of brakes. I was happy to take their money, but it really is pathetic how unskilled some people are with mechanical things.
My wife is a very low level cyclist – very nervous and sketchy on anything but pavement, and she gets confused with gearing. She hopped right on this thing and took my son straight through our fields and up and down our 1 mile driveway without a single problem.
And finally, when my son pedals on this thing it really makes a difference. In fact, he will STAND UP and pedal and we really start to move. There are no stability problems whatsoever.
Disregard the negative reviews – consider the source – do they really have a clue? You know these people that just can’t quite get it right.
Buy this thing and go out and have a blast with your whole family.
NOTE: If you hook up some super heavy p-o-s child’s bike to this don’t expect a miracle when pedaling uphill and braking downhill. I am sure it will be more difficult to manage. My son’s bike is very, very light. I bought this bike specifically for safety concerns – a light bicycle is much less likely to trash your child if they fall. I have seen these ridiculous bikes with all the gear and cosmetic features and they are a safety hazard if a kid beefs it. One of these that is modeled after a popular US motorcycle company product weighs about 50 pounds – how would you like some piece of junk that heavy falling on you? Do your child a favor and buy a light weight bike to learn on and strip off all that crap that will crush your kid!!!
