Topeak MTX Rear Bicycle Basket – Reviews

I had a Topeak rack and a matching panier (travel bag). I needed something a little larger for trips to the beach…don’t buy this basket without the matching Topeak rack or you are wasting your money. Also, you need about 8 inches of clearance between the bootom of the bike seat and the top of the rack…The basket needs to fit under the bike seat…In other words, you need to be six feet tall if you want to use this basket…

Easy slide on -slide off mounting, large enough for a bag of groceries, sturdy enough for a frozen 20 pound turkey. Don’t even think about using the handle to carry groceries though, it can barely support the weight a sack lunch and sweatshirt. Can only be used with a Topeak rack. Suspension seat post or oversize saddle may interfere with fit.

I needed a basket to carry my backpack (laptop, lunch, couple books) from home to the train and back. This definitely fits the bill. The mesh is stronger metal than I would have thought from the pictures, but it’s definitely not indestructible – but you’d have to whack it pretty hard to bend it out of shape. The “handle” is pretty thin, but I have no plans on using this as a shopping basket – though, if you did, the handle should work for all but the heaviest items. The clip fits perfectly into the Topeak rack (explorer rack w/ disc brakes) I bought as well, and it’s a pretty sturdy fit. All in all, it’s a good basket for the money.

I don’t drive so I use my bike for everything. I bring home up to twenty five pounds of groceries, cat litter, etc. about twice a week and have been doing this for about five years and so far nothing on the basket has broken. My routes are not even all paved, sometimes I’m carrying my load over rocky gravel and sand trails but still the basket has held up. I never use the handle so I haven’t encountered any problems there but I will say that in my opinion it isn’t all that easy to slide on and off my seat post mounted Topeak rack. Some WD40 sprayed on helps but still to me it’s not what I’d call easy. I love the look of the basket on my bike but now I’m shopping for a different rack and some rear rack grocery back totes, the kind that hang down from a rack, because I prefer the stability of that lowered center of gravity.
