Topeak Front Bicycle Basket 1370 g / 3.02 lbs ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. I got this basket to accessorize out the wife’s bike. I looked at it vs some others and like it best because of the basket design. It was very sturdy and had the fine mesh down at the bottom with the wide wire frame up at the top. This gives the best of both worlds, you can still carry fine small items on the bottom and strap/tie things to the top. While it was a great basket it didn’t come with a great mount. The mount is ALL plastic. On a load bearing item that’s your first clue it’s going to be trouble. You have some rubber tape strips you attach to the plastic clips which go over your handlebars and into the mounting mechanism. To install it you put these clips in and screw them in. I was really worried about this but examined the clips and at least they had metal screw lining. So I tightened them up a bit but not too tight. The basket then slips on top of this mount. Unfortunately it doesn’t slip on with a “click” so you have to push and pull to make sure your mounted and not going to come off. I could have been ok with this except that with realistic use and not much load the basket begin to sag a little bit over the bumps. I figured I didn’t have it tight enough so I took it off, positioned it just perfect and tightened it up. I didn’t use a powertool or anything but it broke. The metal lining held but the screw broke through the plate that the basket hooks up to. Plastic fails again. I’m going to take another look at the system and see if there is anyway I can rig the mount because I really like the basket. But if not its going back to the store it came from as a disappointment. I expected better. It will probably be replaced with an item that has an inferior basket but a superior mount (all metal). Extra Touches Also that little plastic “extension” clip that comes with it is supposed to be used as extra mounting space for lights, reflectors or bike computers. A nice touch. There is also a metal wire your supposed to thread through the mount and around your handlebar. I guess its in case you experience catastrophic failure of the plastic mounts the basket won’t completely fall off right away. So in Summary Pros Cons Summary As others have posted, this is the best looking front basket on the market but the mounting brackets fail fast– I’ve gone through three of these babies in as many years. The problem is that the plastic is formed way too thin in the screw plate, so that the screw heads easily pull through (as does the safety wire) especially when the weather is hot and the brackets soften. If only Topeak would fix this deficiency in their mold the mounting brackets would probably hold just fine. Currently they do sell the same bracket separately but it is outrageous that the company continues to manufacture such a defective product and charge for replacements. Another niggling little problem is that you have to depress the release leaver not just to remove the basket from the mount, but also to put it back on. This action is quite awkward when the basket is heavily loaded. I’d recommend anyone purchasing this unit despite the aforementioned warnings also to invest in something like the Pyramid I have other Topeak products that are of high quality, but this went into the trash after numerous attempts to properly mount it. Followed all instructions but the flimsy little cable that is supposed to hold the basket from sliding down doesn’t work. First, it slips a lot. When you tighten it, it easily frays from the holding screw. Finally, just when you think you got it positioned and tightened properly, the stub on the other end goes through the weak plastic hole in the bracket that is supposed to hold it (metal being held by a plastic retainer = bad idea). So we called Topeak and got a new wire sent to us. Same problem within 10 minutes. I suppose the basket works great if you keep it empty. We gave up and threw this piece of garbage out. The basket is great- sturdy with small holes. I like that I can throw my bike lock and keys in there without worrying about them slipping through the cracks. The main reason I got that basket was because it was removable- and it does remove easily. The problem is that the basket sags- sometimes so much that it touches my front tire. Nothing falls out, but it’s just annoying. The main problem is that the screws connecting to the plastic part that secures the basket to the part attached to the bike come loose and get lost. After this happened to one, I made sure the others were as tight as possible, but still ended up losing 2 more! The basket stays on with one screw, but I’m not using this again until I can devise a better securing method. I regret my purchase- do not buy this basket!
