Topeak Barn Mirror Bicycle Handlebar Mirror – Reviews

I use the Topeak Bar’n Mirrors for my Riese and Müller Birdy foldable bike. Perfect!
The mirrors are small but nevertheless a good help, especially at night.

Want to see the whole world through an amusement park funny mirror? Enjoy the challenge of squinting at swirls and blobs behind you while simultaneously dodging traffic and potholes? Get these worthless (albeit stylish) add-ons and you’ll wonder if you’re actually seeing traffic hurling at you from behind, or if this is just another one of those flashbacks from that Kool-Aid acid test you “accidentally” stumbled into back in ’68. While absolutely useless as mirrors (they’re actually concave slivers of chromed plastic), they do offer some stunning special effects– cars change size and shape (a la Transformers), floating pedestrian torsos scurry to meet legs waiting across the street, buildings furl like flags in a breeze… and all this as you fly down the road on your otherwise respectable bicycle trying not to injure others or get yourself killed.

I paid $10 for these on Amazon, but I’ve seen them retailing for $40 in local bike stores. If you MUST have these, please send ME your $20 right away instead and I will immediately send you two stainless steel soup spoons you can strap to your handlebars– a VAST improvement over these pieces of garbage (dropping LSD and riding your bike backwards would be equivalent).

I find these mirrors an elegant and subtle solution to all the standard, clunky-looking bicycle mirrors out there.

Admittedly, the mirror-angle adjustments are not as precise as they could be; rather than using preset detents, Topeak would have done better to make the angle infinitely adjustable within the arc. My solution to that problem is simply not to fully tighten the mirror assemblies–just enough to stay in place while allowing me to rotate the entire assembly in either direction on the bar. (I should add here that I NEVER use the mirror assemblies as grippable, weight-bearing bar-ends, ONLY as mirrors.) This minutely adjustable rotation allows me to tune the mirror angle in very small increments.

As for the quality of the mirrors themselves, I have no problems at all. Everything behind me appears in a sharp, wide angle view.

The only problem I’ve had–and this is my own fault–is catching the open mirrors on something while backing up my bike and snapping them off. But in the normal, everyday, non-doofus world they work fine. And if I happen to sideswipe an object while in forward motion, the mirrors obligingly fold inward, none the worse for wear.

Stout all-metal construction with real glass mirrors. Easy installation and comfortable as grips whether or not mirrors are deployed. The design compromise is that the mirrors are vertically short, making the image difficult to assess at a glance. Once unfolded, the mirrors pivot on a horizontal axis through a fixed set of detents, so the optimum grip angle may not coincide with a useful pivot setting.
