Planet Bike 3042 Spok LED Micro Headlight – Reviews

This light has come off all three times I’ve dropped my bike.

The velcro mount, and base of the light housing stay on my bike, and the rest falls to the ground.

I’m not talking dramatic crashes, just light spills. Once a kid accidentally just tipped the stationary bike over on the sidewalk. In none of these falls did anything acctually touch the light, which is mounted very close to the center of my handlebars.

If this was designed correctly, it would stay on.

The first time, it came off in one piece, and snapped right back on.

The second time it came off and I had to scrounge around for all three pieces (the battery, the windshield, and the rest. And the third time the three pieces flew off separately _and_ the windshield shattered into three pieces.

Fortunately the middle piece was pretty big, and now I’ve got a few rubber bands wrapped all around the thing to hold it on.

So I guess the good news is that it does still work. Which is somewhat surprising, especially since the first time it fell off, I don’t notice until my return trip, where I found that it had been soaking in a puddle for about 3 hours.

I give this a second star because it didn’t cost much and it does still work.

This headlight is by no means a primary headlight. BUT, if you mostly ride in the day (in my case commuting), on the off-chance that it gets dark on you, it is a perfect light in that situation. It is lightweight and small, so it is not a problem to keep on the handlebars during daylight rides, then if you must ride in the dark, it does a good job keeping you visible – especially in flashing mode. Even without a regular headlamp, with city streets, it is decent enough for you to see the road ahead. Along with a headlamp, this is definitely nice to have for visibility’s sake as a flasher.

I commute year round in Iowa and this light performs well. It is bright enough to light the path (enough so that I can see) on the darkest parts of my commute. However, if you want a light primarily to light the way, it might be good to look elsewhere (it gets the job done, but others could do it better. For those worried about plastic durability on the clamp, you do not have to worry because the spok is held on by a velcro strap.
