Park Tool HHP 3 Home Mechanic Bearing Cup Press – Reviews

Not all people knows how to make there own tools. And its not over price at all.If I did not know how to make my tools here then I would buy it.Some time you are better off buying the tools you need or if you can rent them.

Yes, it’s a threaded rod only distinguishable from a do-it-yourself press by having single-piece handles. However, given the enormous pressure needed to press industrial bike headsets back together, I really would rather use this than try to fuss around with a wrench. The tool steel washers that sustain the pressure did their job much better than any cheap aluminum washers could… I should know, because I did use aluminum washers, and they and one of the included nylon washers were all bent nearly double by the time I pressed the headset of my Worksman M2600 back together.

To explain further, the HHP-3 is as simple a screw press as you can get. It’s made of a threaded rod, two identical handles that supply the pressure, two steel washers that make up the pressing surface, two nylon washers that fit between each handle and its corresponding press washer to keep the rotation of the handle from leaving scratches in the pressure washer or even race cups (be sure to grease them, too!), and an extender collar. This last item turned out to be the only reason I didn’t return this tool as useless… turns out the way my bike’s frame is welded to the headset, the flat handles couldn’t even tighten all the way down before catching on the frame. With the extender collar on one side, and two extra greased aluminum washers between it, the handle, and the nylon washer, I was able to tighten the pressure washers all the way down… but at the cost of the extender tube crushing the aluminum and nylon washers into a cone shape, and actually cutting a crescent through one of the aluminum washers. Had this been a DIY rig, given my previous experience with such projects, I have no doubt that one tiny slip of the wrench would probably have sheared the whole thing apart at the worst possible moment, and still wouldn’t have supplied enough pressure to get the race cups pressed in properly.

So, this tool may be simple in design, but it gets the job done with a degree of precision, strength, and safety that are difficult to find in any jury-rigged projects. However, unless your head tube is very long, or your frame strangely shaped to give at least six inches of clearance in a full circle on one side of the tube, you will need to use the extender collar, and consequently burn through washers every time you use it. If you expect to press heads together more than once, it’s probably a better investment to get a real bike headset press with proper angled handles and close-fitting, interchangable race bushings for about 3x the price.

Or, DIY it if you want. Personally, I’d rather not DIY stuff that has a low tolerance for error, like high-pressure tools. Better to save my time and energy for rigging simple stuff that can’t take my hand off if I screw it up.

I bought this tool since I am always working taking apart my bikes and this tool is very useful. I read previews reviews about tool and opportunities you may have but tool allows you to go straight and avoid damaging important frame areas. The handles are very useful for control purposes.
