Kryptonite New York Noose 1213 Chain Bicycle Lock with Evolution Series 4 Disc Lock Chain Bicycle Lock (4 Foot x 3 Inch) – Reviews

When the chain is secured to a stationary object then locked with the Disc Lock,I feel confident leaving my Vespa parked on the street. The chain is heavy but the noose-type chain allows security with a shorter chain. I wrap the chain around a pole, loop the chain through the noose end, pull tight, and lock it to the scoot using the Disc Lock. I’m rather certain that the looks of this set will make a would-be thief think twice.

This pile of chain and lock weighs in at over 8 lbs, so it’s not something to carry around on a daily basis on a bicycle unless you really, really need it. I got mine to leave at work. Most folks are using cables and those U locks, and the cables are getting cut on a regular basis. The chain gives me a lot of different options for locking my bike up. The chain and lock are not totally unbreakable but like the old joke about outrunning a bear, I have the best lock in the bunch so it’s less likely it will be my bike that gets picked on.

My only complaint is that the nylon sleeve started to unravel the day I got it. I’ve sewn it back up with some thread but my expectation is that I’m going to have to sew my own sleeves. Oh yeah when I do, I’ll be making two of them, so I can use the lock easier to fold the chain back around and hook it together. (not the ring side, that’s fine, the lock end, so that there are two independent loops.

I originally ordered this lock to keep my wallet safely secured to my pants. After ruining 4 pairs of JNCO’s I decided to brainstorm. What else could I use this multi-pound beast for? I hopped on my Vespa, Bernie, and v-lined for the local pharmacy to pick up my daily dose of Rolos and diet A&W, when I noticed a gangly group of majorities crowding the entry door. I needed my brainfood, so I revved my 50CC engine to intimidate them. Their music must have had them caught in a trance, so I beeped Bernie’s horn to alert them once more. Nothing.

That’s when I remembered and retrieved the Kryptonite New York Noose. You could smell the fear in their eyes. I swung the chain like a billy stick, approaching them calmly. They started coming at me one by one, but they were no match for the 10mm glowing golden circles of death. After a brief one minute routing I was greeted with thunderous applause from local patrons and the entire Walgreens staff. I was their hero.

I got this lock to use for two purposes:

1) locking up my 1980s cheapo road bike for an all-day stay by a DC metro station
2) locking up my “steal me” looking fancy road bike for short periods of time

Yes, it weighs a ton. Yes, it’s kind of inconvenient to carry around. But when a bike thief looks at a rack of bikes and sees this thing, he’s definitely going to spend his time messing with something else. As many have pointed out, a thief can ultimately break any lock – the key to security is deterrence, and this one will definitely deter someone looking for a quick job. The majority of thieves here in DC seem to favor the car screw jack approach to pop U-locks – that approach is impossible with this lock due to the size of the locking mechanism.

For me, the best way to carry this thing is bandoleer style. Be aware that putting it in a bag will pretty much crush anything in the bag, as well as make the bag super heavy. Putting the lock on is definitely a two-handed routine – n
