Crank Brothers 5050 XX Bicycle Pedal (Black) – Reviews
By no means an experienced rider like the other reviewer, so perhaps it is only fitting that I’ve had the opposite experience. Meaning that I simply love these pedals.
I’ve only been back to riding for the past six months after a prolonged fifteen year absence — and even back then, my road bike mostly sat in the garage as I was involved in other athletic pursuits. But now I am at it with a vengeance, as due to some back problems it’s the only real* sport I can engage in.
My bike, a Jamis Allegro 3X came with regular pedals and being the competitive sort I quickly realized (and learned by talking to other riders and reading on-line articles) that I needed a firmer grip under my sneakers in order to improve my cadence. Got ahead of myself and purchased clipless pedals — Keo Sprints to be exact — and road shoes. Put them on the bike, went through the recommended drills…but simply didn’t feel that at my current skill level it’d be wise to go that route. My body’s already taken quite a pounding as is; the clipless will just have to wait till I feel more comfortable with my riding skills. So back to research it was. And thus I came into the world of BMX/downhill pedals in their multiple configurations. Some have jagged/serrated edges, others, like the one that occupies us here, use different pin combinations. Ultimately I went with the Crank Brothers 5050 XX because of two reaons:
A-Recommended by other riders who have them
and
B-Looks. Yes, admittedly a vapid reason, but the fact is the black/silver combo looks like it was made for my bike’s paint/components color-scheme
And after using them but a bit over a month I have nothing but good things to say about the. Nice and wide for my size thirteen’s, I replaced the headless screws they came with for the short, pointed studs that are also included. Had no problem at all replacing them as the plates came easily apart. Did add some blue locktite in addition to what they already come with. Sturdy as well, as I stand on them quite a bit while riding and they feel very secure under my 210lbs. I also try to remember to check the studs for tightness once a week. So far, not a glitch. The grip is fantastic and as much as I need — a street rider over 95% of the time, not once have my rubber-soled riding shoes slipped off of these pedals and that’s with the short pins only. Need yet more grip? Get the longer ones. For my needs these more than suffice. Cadence has improved considerably, I feel quite a bit more confident on my bike. Oh, and did I tell you they look great? So much so that other riders I cross paths with have made positive comments and/or inquiries about them.
I see no reason why with just a bit of maintenance these pedals won’t last for quite some time. Especially given the use I alluded to earlier. So if your looking for an excellent step-up from your regular pedals, and like me, feel you’re not quite ready to go clipless, well, look no further than these.
Do shop around though, as prices vary wildly. I got a great deal — and service — from an Amazon merchant, deal_runner, for about $65.00 + shipping. Should you find them in that range, seriously doubt you’ll regret buying these.
*I write “real” because as much as I’ve tried doing it, walking just doesn’t cut it as a sport for me.

These are terrific pedals. The sealed cartridge bearings were a key factor in my decision: no loosening or binding as sometimes happens with caged balls. Also, the traction screws are perfect. I use these on a loaded touring bike, enabling me to NOT wear clip-in shoes while touring but still have great traction and large contact area during long rides while on tour, almost regardless of footwear. Tried many pedals systems for my purposes; this is the best. (first suggested by noted phred M.B. of Asheville, NC). — PJClements

When I banged my shins up pretty bad with a cheap set of pedals, I immediately went out and bought: shin guards, and these wicked pedals. I don’t know what I can say that hasn’t already been said before, they are simply wonderful, I didn’t think I would notice such a difference. I lost footing countless times with my last set of pedals before I recognized the issue; it wasn’t until I almost fractured my shin in the woods that I realized how badly I needed better pedals. Don’t wait until it’s too late and you have terrible shin scars, I haven’t looked back.
Another reviewer mentioned some problems with screws and pins. I haven’t had anything bad happen to me, But I am noticing that some of my pins are becoming loose. I think this is important to note, because it could eventually cause some people to lose their pins, and need to buy new ones. If you are having this problem, get yourself some blue loctite at an auto parts store, and reattach these pins with the loctite in place.
