Blackburn Mars 4.0 Bicycle Taillight – Reviews
I recently purchased 15 Blackburn Mars 4.0 Tail Lights to use on a week long bicycle trip. Although this trip would be in the daylight, I have noticed bicycles with bright tail lights from distances of 1/2 of a mile, even on bright, sunny days. We seemed to receive earlier driver recconition and curtesy because of the tail lights. This Mars 4.0 fits the bill perfectly and I highly reccomend it for all your biking.
One minor exageration on the part of Blackburn. They rate the light at 150 hours on blinking and 50 hours on solid light. We used the lights about 6 – 7 hours a day and found that they were no longer adaquit for DAY LIGHT usage after 30 hours. This is with the included Duracell batteries. We replaced the batteries as needed with off brand alkaline batteries and got about the same results. BUT, even with 30 hours of super, bright visability, the cost of batteries was only 1 1/4 cents an hour! I think you could expect up to 75 hours of night time protection on blinking mod

Good items;
The light is very bright, has a good mounting systems and the clip is strong enough to mount directly to a bag if it hangs correctly. It also has a tight grip so it will not come off of a bag or backpack unlike the Mars 3.0. The coin lip to replace batteries is extremely welcome instead of 3 very tiny screws that were easily stripped on the 3.0 unit.
Bad item:
The light will dim or even turn off from a hard shock or just a bunny hop over a crack in the road. I will be returning this light for a replacement to see if it was just a one time bad unit.
My review will be updated after the replacement is received and this item will either get all five stars or be down graded to a one star item.
10-15-2010 Update
Amazon’s return policy was painless and hassle free. A replacement light was shipped immediately and free return shipping.
The light works just fine on both a bag and and the included mount which incurs more jarring impacts.
I am going to give this item a 4 star ratin

I agree with all the other helpful reviews that this is a great light, and that some features could be improved (mount could be sturdier & less plasticky). I don’t find the button tough to push but I don’t leave it on the mount, so I could see how in the cold or rain this could be tough.
Someone else said it’s a pain to use AAA rather than AA, but I find that’s manageable. While I love the light & its visibility, I had an issue with how quickly the AAA batteries drained when I was NOT using the light. I don’t think the button got depressed accidentally, but though I’ve only had this a couple of months, the first batteries are already dead!! I’ve replaced them now & will watch to see if it happens again, but maybe take the batteries out when not in use for a long stretch of time.

The Blackburn Mars 4.0 Bicycle Taillight is OK. I would not recommend it. It is only bright when you are directly behind it.
I ride my bike 11 to and from work and ride home after sunset. Memphis is rated as one of the worst cities to ride a bike in. I want to make sure I can be seen. I use the Blackburn Mars 4.0 Bicycle Taillight flashing Taillight light, but I don’t feel that it is bright enough unless you are directly behind it.
The side LEDs may as well not be there. You can hardly see them.
