Blackburn Flea Rear USB Solar Bicycle Headlight – Reviews
I really like this lite. I even bought another one. It is extremely bright for such a small light and have attached it to my bike helmet. By doing that I can ride any bike and always have a light with me. I bought the front and rear lights and have the USB hook up, the battery hookup and the solar panel. I would recommend this to others if you want a light the weights next to nothing and bright. I don’t know how long the charge lasts as I haven’t run it down and I charge when I am done riding so they are always ready..I’ll update my review as needed..Cheers.

ME: Cannondale Quick owner, daily bike commuter.
I started out liking this light for its light weight and small size, but now I wish I had spent the money elsewhere. The USB rear light is rather bright, but has some serious drawbacks.
GRIPE ONE: Blackburn incorporates a velcro strap mounting system that works with the Flea’s metal clip, fastening it the light to the seatpost. However, the LED lights on the Flea are VERY directional! This means that their true brightness is only seen via direct line of sight to the LED’s. Since all bikes have seatposts that slant rearward, by default your Flea shines toward the ground about 12-15′ behind you, and NOT toward the traffic approaching.
The lack of a proper mounting system that allows the light’s beam to shine parallel to the ground (not at it) is incredibly frustrating. I tried clipping it to my seat bag as a solution, however since the bag is not rigid the same thing happens–improper direction.
It would not be a problem if the light were not so directional, but turn it a few degrees off your line of sight and the brightness drops dramatically.
GRIPE TWO: Blackburn’s USB charging system that allows you to plug into any computer’s USB is touted as some kind of convenience. It would be, I suppose, if there were more USB ports than regular plugs in the world! Think about it– how many plugs are in your house, vs. USB ports? In practice, this can mean unplugging your mouse, digging behind your pc tower, or running your laptop when you’d rather not just to charge something that ought to have a wall connection. Blackburn does it to cut their costs (no need to include a more expensive converter plug), not for your convenience. It could be said that you can charge the light even if you’re somewhere you can’t get to a plug, so if you’re out in the jungle with no electricity and just a laptop… yeah, not likely.
Furthermore, the USB plug is chinsey, and its magnetic connection feels “iffy”. It needs to be checked time and time again to make sure it’s properly contacting the USB port. You’ll constantly ask yourself, “is it charging, is it charging?” NUTS!!
GRIPE THREE: This one concerns the velcro strap system. These little velcro straps can wear out, and if you pull too hard when you tighten it it breaks (happened to me). Nothing else quite replaces it either, being so proprietary in design with a little grip surface and JUST the right width. Furthermore, it makes it hard to get the same mount location every time, as opposed to a piece of hardware that you clip the light to. What were they thinking?
BLACKBURN: If you are reading, give this light a proper (rigid) mounting system and a positive-connecting wall charger.

The flea tail lite is very small but also very brite. I like the rechargeable part & the solar panel works well. I work 11pm to 7am and ride my bike as often as the weather will let me. A few of my co-workers saw me on there way to work and could not belive how brite & small the flea tail lite is. It is easy to put on and take off the bike so rechargeing is a snap. Great product 5 stars

I bought a FLEA without the solar panel and then I became ill for a while and was put on bed rest for almost 2 months. Well, when I started to ride my bike, I could not find the charger to save my life! It is smaller than a thumb drive! So, I went on-line in the middle of the night to the Blackburn site and asked about how to purchase another charger. That day, I had an email from one of their tech/customer support people telling me that a new charger is on its way! What? They didn’t try to “soak” me for a few bucks? I was pleasantly surprised. Remember, this light comes with a lifetime warranty. Fortunately, I registered my FLEA light as soon as I got it (a bit of a habit). Well, before I contacted Blackburn, in resignation, I ordered another one. I got the Solar model and did not notice it! What a nice setup. The light, the charger, the solar panel and a velcro strap for mounting the light. The overall documentation is only a small, 4″ X 6″ sheet after folding and very tiny print. I went to the Blackburn site and downloaded the FLEA manual and it is much more readable using Acrobat Reader. REMEMBER TO READ THE MANUAL AND TO MAKE NO ASSUMPTIONS BY WORKING THIS THING ON YOUR OWN! When charging the FLEA, 4 lights blink intermittently and dimly while charging and all four flash at full brighness every 15 seconds or so when fully charged.
This is a very simple system, very small and extremely lightweight. However the lights on this system are BRIGHT! This rear light will make one rather visible so that drivers can see you without a problem in order to avoid hitting you or, who knows, so that they can more effectively run you down! LOL! I have another rear light that I purchased with my bike and it must be rather dim when compared with the FLEA. You cannot go wrong with this light, its effectiveness and, amazingly enough, their technical/customer support!
