These panniers did the job on an 8-day camping/biking trip. However, the hooks on each side are attached to 2 bungee cords, and one of these on each side broke within a few weeks of heavy use. The hooks still function because of the other cords, but I’m worried that they might break too eventually. Also, although there is a top handle for carrying the panniers, it’s rather awkward to carry them with it and a shoulder strap would have been a nice addition.

My fiancee and I take a sunday bike ride to the nearest grocery store, before I purchased these bags we were just strapping bookbags on our backs to carry the groceries, it was not ideal.

I did a lot of research on different bags here on amazon, and read all the reviews and decided these seemed the best for the price, and I was right. Fits perfectly onto my bike rack, doesn’t flap in the wind or anything. Easy to install, easy to remove. Carries A LOT of food, in my opinion, at least a lot more than two book bags. Extremely happy with these.

I bought these for myself for father’s day. I’m not so good at converting 1380 cubic inches to useful dimensions for the bags. The main compartment is around 14″x9″x4″. It’s a REAL stretch to get my 15″ screen laptop into one of the compartments. I had to do a bit of pushing and pulling. Other than that, I fully expect to be able to get a set of work clothes into one of these bags without any problems as long as the shoes aren’t too bulky. I’ve included a picture so you can see them relative to a standard sized road bike.
I just attached them tonight, so they haven’t been on the road yet. I’ll update the review when I get a couple of commutes in.

I am very happy with this item.

I hate reading reviews and then realizing that the reviewer has used the item only very briefly. I have had the Avenir Metro Panniers on my bike for nearly 2 months now and I’m ready to offer my opinion . . . so far, so good.

Initially I strapped them to my rear rack and jumped on the bike for a test ride. My heels bumped the bags almost every time I pedaled so I headed home for readjustment. I was able to position the bags as far back as possible, and since then my heels have only bumped the bags 2 or 3 times total. My daily commute is 8.5 miles, so I think that is acceptable.

The construction of the bags seems good. The seams and straps are all still intact. The oft mentioned bungee cords are also still intact (although I do have a couple spares in one of the pockets . . . just in case). I regularly carry 2 to 4 bottles of water, dried fruit, bungee cords, books, and work clothes in the bags with no problems.

Just one final caution . . .

These packs are great. Straps right on any bike rack out there and they are waterproof. I wish I had ordered a tiny bit smaller bags as my big size 12 shoes don’t quite fit.

We had looked at several different brands/types of panniers, and even purchased a slightly different model, but that model didn’t work because our heels hit the panniers as we rode. This model does not have that problem; we wear size 9 shoes and there are still 3-4 inches between our heels and the bags. Also, these panniers could be positioned closer or farther from the pedals as needed. They are wonderfully easy to attach and remove, with handles for easy carrying. They fit a gallon jug of milk in each easily, along with even more items of various sizes.
One note of caution: You will need the right sort of bike rack to fit the panniers on the bike (or else you will need to be creative). We found that we needed bike racks that had a little bend in the metal near the wheel, enough to catch on the panniers’ lower hook to keep them snug.
Overall, great buy! Well worth it.

While the Avenir small panniers are exactly what the ad’s explanation is, I now wish that I had gone with the larger set. It does hold my Dell laptop – but just barely.

I’ve had this bicycle trunk for a couple of years now. In concept, it’s great. A place to put the miscellaneous stuff you need while riding (a toolkit for on-the-spot fixes, bike locks, and the like) plus fold away panniers for carrying bulkier stuff. The problem comes down to the size of the panniers. They are analogous to those little “waste bins for your car” they used to sell at car washes. Cute, sure, but very limited in capacity. I use my bike for grocery shopping. If I have more than two plastic grocery bags of groceries, forget it. I have to ride home with half the stuff in the panniers and the other half on one arm.
Unfortunately, as another reviewer has noted, the use of this trunk precludes supplementing it with a grocery bag pannier.
I’d suggest that Topeak consider redesigning the rack to allow the use of a supplemental set of panniers with another bar to hang the other pannier from.
Also, the comment on the problems with the zipper, at least as far the main compartm

i kind of wish i had bought the bigger bag but thats OK with Topeak it is so easy to switch out if i buy the bigger one it is easy to use both as needed this is a must have for any biker that is going the distance

The bag extends over the sides of the rack, so you are out of luck using this with shopping bag panniers.

The Topeak MTX Trunk bag EX was my second try at a Topeak Bag– the RX trunk bag was just ridiculously small. This bag is merely too small. There is room for a lunch, a small tool kit, your keys, wallet and cellphone, and that’s about it. Forget about trying to cram a windbreaker or a fleece vest in there. The zinger is that while you may be tempted to cram, the zipper is far too delicate for me to have confidence that it will take any abuse whatever. Caveat emptor.

I recently purchased a Topeak MTX Trunk Bag to go on the Topeak Bike Rack that I also purchased at Amazon.com. The trunk bag snaps securely onto the bike rack. I purchased these items for my son in college to commute to his classes on campus. The MTX bag holds his books and other personal items to get through a full roster of classes. This system is excellent, I can carry everything I need to day commute and have extra room to boot, be careful when ordering as there are several parts to the whole system. The system is durable and easy to install!

The rack is interesting and well designed because it mates perfectly with the Topeak Explorer rack. What I mean is that the bag has a hard plastic spine on the bottom that integrates itself with the Explorer bike rack. The bike rack and bag are like puzzle pieces that slide together and interlock perfectly. The rack is set up so that the bag can be removed and carried with you (shoulder strap included) quickly and easily, and when ready to ride, snapped securely back into place. The bag has the fold up pannier sides for a very versatile and compact cargo unit that can handle locks, food, shoes, and other miscellaneous stuff. I chose the model with the rigid sides because some of the earlier models with soft sides deformed when the pannier bags carried heavier loads. It seemed a reasonable upgrade and worth the price difference. I haven’t yet really tested the load limits, but so far it has been able to handle everything I have needed for day trips on the streets and trail.

If that is the question, the answer is Topeak! I got this bag over the holidays. I use it with my Topeak Explorer rack and love the MTX system. Very convenient. I use the bag for commuting. I find that I can almost always fit everything I need for work (lunch, change of clothes, wallet, ID, etc.) in the main compartment and one of the panniers. That’s great b/c it leaves the other pannier available for those quick grocery stops on the way home or to carry home goods from Amazon delivered to work. I can also still easily bungee cord bulkier items (fleece jacket, e.g.) over the top, too. All in all, a GREAT commuter rack trunk.

The panniers fold up and away nicely if you just want a truck and no panniers, which has been my usual configuration for weekend rides.

It’s solidly constructed and the zippers and seams have already held up remarkably well to some abuse. I got a rain cover for it, but have only used it when it’s REALLY pouring down, b/c for a passing shower, this bag is
