Bicycle Locks – Reviews
the size of this lock is perfect although it was heavier than i expected. great for riding around town and the light incorporated in the key is genius.

This is my second Evo-Mini. I acquired a new bike and wanted to take advantage of the Anti-Theft Policy Krypto offers on a new lock (up to $2000 for the Evo Mini, be sure to read the fine print). Though functionally the same, Krypto has made some improvements/changes to the lock since they sent me a replacement following the Bic pen debacle of 2004. Namely, the cross bar is a bit bigger and shaped differently on the key side, and (this is a good one) the keys are redesigned so that they hang more like normal keys on a key chain-they used to have a large oval section which was roughly perpendicular to the blade of the key, now the oval section is smaller and positioned parallel to the blade.
As a side note, though this purchase was predicated largely on the Krypto Anti-Theft Policy, the best policy is to make your locked bike look too difficult, time consuming, etc to a would-be thief. To those ends, I plan on using this lock in tandem with a New York Noose chain.

There is a serious flaw to these locks: the keys open multiple Kryptonite locks. I guess they were too cheap to manufacture unique key threads for each lock. After locking my bike up in a well lit area in front of a popular eatery, I returned 15 minutes later to find the lock still attached to bike hoop without my bike. Another reviewer mentioned this problem with Kryptonite locks in Amazon reviews. However, I didn’t think much of it and regretfully purchased the Evolution Mini. Now I am out of a bike and stuck with a lock that too risky to use.
I suggest you purchase some other lock than the Kryptonite Evolution Mini.

Bicycle Locks – Reviews
After losing my bike due to an inadequate cable-lock I read up on bicycle locks and 2 points stood out. 1, The Fahgettaboudit locks were top-rated, and 2, use two types of lock. So I purchased the fahghettaboudit u-lock as well as their 5-foot chain lock. Fortunately, this is for my work location and I can leave the locks at site. You’d have to be pretty stoic to carry both of these locks around with you! I’m satisfied that these are about the best protection I can hope for. Kryptonite seems to have done their homework. Amazon on the other hand… Amazon built their reputation back when they stocked and delivered their own merchandise — with the highest standard of service. Nowadays they connect buyer and seller. So you are at the mercy of whatever random merchandiser ships your order. My U-lock was shipped flopping around inside a cardboard box with one “bag-o-air”. Due to the weight of the item and the fact that it was free to slam around in the box, the plastic weathe

I love the lock and it IS the most hardcore one on the market. Two things to be aware of though:
1 – the disc style mechanism can be a little touchy and my friend’s kryptonite stopped accepting its key. I’m sure it’s a key issue and not a lock issue though and if he had registered his keys there would have been no problem. (so register).
2 – Another friend left his nice road bike locked with a NY lock over a long time while he was travelling. He came back and the bike was still there but the lock was so rusted that it was impossible for the key to unlock it from the frame/post. Bolt cutters, saws, prybars, etc couldn’t either. Suffice it to say the frame remains there to this day. (So keep it dry if storing for a long time).
Good luck!

First impression : “This thing is HUGE, HEAVY, how am I ever going to mount this on my bike?”
Well, you CAN mount it. Use the Master Lock 8351D Smart Bracket. It works like a charm. You’ll pay $4 on Amazon to buy the bracket. When you get it, take out the two screws from the shackle portion of the mount and throw them away. Then go to the hardware store and pay $1 for two M4 30mm bolts. If you use those to mount the hardware on the shackle, it works great. See my pictures, and more info on my review of the Master Lock 8351D Smart Bracket.
The lock itself is heavily reviewed on the web – no need for me to repeat that here. BUT seriously consider WHAT you are going to lock your bike to. You cannot use this on a lamp post, and I have great doubts about whether it will work on a parking meter — the lock is just too small.
Check my uploaded images and you’ll see the dimensions. I lock it to a very strong street sign at work, but it’s a tight fit. You may want to measure your “fixed device” and bike frame and do the math before getting this, and make sure it will fit for you.
If I get to try this with a parking meter I’ll update my review.
Highly recommended – but make sure to buy the mount, and check the size issue before you buy.

I purchased this lock less than 2 months ago and was impressed by how big and sturdy it was, however within a few weeks the interior had rusted and it became difficult to open and close the lock. It now takes over a minute of jostling and tugging just to get the stupid thing open, and who knows how the rust may have compromised its integrity as an anti-theft device.
It’s not as though my bike is always sitting out in the rain either – I keep it locked either indoors or under shelter the majority of the time, but I do live in the Pacific Northwest so some water exposure is inevitable. Even so, I would think that for $60 a lock should be able to take the occasional rain shower. The crappy $10 U-lock I got from Walmart for my last bike lasted almost a year without significant rusting, and it never jammed or stuck because of the rust.
All in all I am extremely frustrated and disappointed with this purchase. I did my homework and thought that by spending extra to get a high-quality lock I would not need to replace it any time soon – certainly not within the first two months of owning it. I would strongly advise against purchasing this lock, particularly if you ever plan to lock your bike outdoors.
**Added** The day after I wrote this review, the flimsy plastic face plate fell off for no particular reason. Truly a well-made product.
Other notes:
-No mounting brackets, and considering the weight it’s not something fun to toss into your pack or put on the handlebars.
-Size is great for preventing the use of a jack but it makes it more or less impossible to lock anything other than your bike frame (at least if you have wider tires like I do). I’ve taken to using this lock for my frame and a chain lock for my wheels when my bike will be parked somewhere for more than a few hours.
-Truly built like a tank. There’s no way anyone’s going to saw through this thing, at least not without drawing a lot of attention to themselves. If it weren’t for the problems I mentioned above I would feel quite confident with this lock.
