Just Ride: A Radically Practical Guide to Riding Your Bike
Bicycle Books – Features
In the same way that Michael Pollan’s slim bestseller Food Rules brought a gust of common sense to the everyday activity of eating, Just Ride is a revelation. Forget the ultralight, uncomfortable bikes, flashy jerseys, clunky shoes that clip onto tiny pedals, the grinding out of endless miles. Instead, ride like you did when you were a kid—just get on your bike and discover the pure joy of riding it.
A reformed racer who’s commuted by bike every day since 1980, whose writings and opinions appear in major bicycling and outdoor magazines, and whose company, Rivendell Bicycle Works, makes bikes for riders ready to opt out of a culture overrun by racing, Grant Petersen shares a lifetime of unexpected facts, controversial opinions, expert techniques, and his own maverick philosophy. In 87 short, two-to-three page chapters, it covers:
• Riding: Count Days, Not Miles; Corner Like Jackie Robinson; Steer with Your Hips, Shift with Your Legs
• Suiting Up: The Shoes Ruse; Ponchos—the Ultimate Unracer’s Garment
• Safety: #1 Rule—Be Seen; Helmets Aren’t All They’re Cracked Up to Be
• Health and Fitness: Why Riding Is Lousy All-Around Exercise; Saddles Don’t Cause Impotence; Drink When You’re Thirsty—Not Before
Also includes chapters on Accessories, Upkeep, and Technicalities as well as a final chapter titled “Velosophy” that includes the essential, memorable thought: Your Bike Is a Toy—Have Fun with It.

Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself
Bicycle Books – Features
Finding Ultra is Rich Roll’s incredible-but-true account of achieving one of the most awe-inspiring midlife physical transformations ever.
One cool evening in October 2006, the night before he was to turn forty, Rich experienced a chilling glimpse of his future. Nearly fifty pounds overweight at the time and unable to climb the stairs without stopping, he could see where his current sedentary lifestyle was taking him.
Most of us, when granted such a moment of clarity, look the other way—but not Rich.
Plunging into a new way of eating that made processed foods off-limits and that prioritized plant nutrition, and vowing to train daily, Rich morphed—in a matter of mere months—from out-of-shape midlifer to endurance machine. When one morning ninety days into his physical overhaul, Rich left the house to embark on a light jog and found himself running a near marathon, he knew he had to scale up his goals.
How many of us take up a sport at age forty and compete for the title of the world’s best within two years? Finding Ultra recounts Rich’s remarkable journey to the starting line of the elite Ultraman competition, which pits the world’s fittest humans against each other in a 320-mile ordeal of swimming, biking, and running. And following that test, Rich conquered an even greater one: the Epic5—five Ironman-distance triathlons, each on a different Hawaiian island, all completed in less than a week.
But Finding Ultra is much more than an edge-of-the-seat look at a series of jaw-dropping athletic feats—and much more than a practical training manual for those who would attempt a similar transformation. Yes, Rich’s account rivets—and, yes, it instructs, providing information that will be invaluable to anyone who wants to change their physique. But this book is most notable as a powerful testament to human resiliency, for as we learn early on, Rich’s childhood posed numerous physical and social challenges, and his early adulthood featured a fierce battle with alcoholism.
Ultimately, Finding Ultra is a beautifully written portrait of what willpower can accomplish. It challenges all of us to rethink what we’re capable of and urges us, implicitly and explicitly, to “go for it.”

Obsessive Compulsive Cycling Disorder
Bicycle Books – Features
Obsessive Compulsive Cycling Disorder is an anthology of thirty articles written by an amateur cyclist over a period of ten years. The collection exhibits the madness that engulfs those who descend into cycling obsession, celebrating the average cyclist living in a world defined by the pros. The writings range from fanciful musings concerning the Tao of singlespeeding to lengthy descriptions of end-to-end rides in Britain and Ireland. Mountain biking, road cycling, classic alpine climbs and all sorts of other cycling events are chronicled along the way. Each is written in a lighthearted style designed to bring the reader into the author’s world which is often littered with incident and humour. Within the pages the reader will find a loose ticklist of events to ride, bikes to own and challenges to take on. Each described in the author’s own inimitable style.
About the Author
Dave Barter is a British cyclist. Excellent we’ve got that out of the way. A non-cycling author of a series of bicycle based reflections would have a hint of incongruity about it. He likes to think of himself as an all rounder having tried many two wheeled disciplines and fallen off most of them. In 2001 he chucked in his job and went cycling. In 2010 he did exactly the same thing again. In between times he’s written a few articles about cycling and a few of them have even made it into print.
Dave was born in Ely Hospital in 1966 after his Dad raced floodwater to get his Mum to the ward before the river Ouse burst. This explains why he is always in a rush. Dave lives in deepest Wiltshire with his wife Helen and his children Jake and Holly. Wembley the cat used to reside within the family as well but sadly snuffed it a few years ago. Dave’s fiscal profession is Information Technology. He writes articles to fund bike parts and is currently attempting to finish a number of books. Once he has read them, he’ll turn his attention to his half completed writing projects. Like all good IT practitioners he rarely finishes anything. Obsessive Compulsive Cycling Disorder is the rare exception.

The Road Back
Bicycle Books – Features
“THE ROAD BACK, A Journey of Grace and Grit,” is the story of Matt Miller, 20, a University of Virginia student and member of the college triathlon club.He and two classmates had just pedaled up a mountain pass. Matt was on top of the world in so many ways, in love, with dreams of attending medical school, so fit his resting pulse was 42! And then, as he cycled along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, he fell, face first, into an oncoming Porsche at 40 miles an hour. He broke every bone in his face, suffered massive brain injury. The real story is not what happened, but what happened after. Vitez shares with readers the incredible, humbling, miraculous story of Matt’s survival and recovery –all the way back to medical school and an Ironman Triathlon. It is a story, truly, of grace and grit, as gripping as it is inspiring. Ride along!
Vitez first wrote about Matt for his newspaper, The Philadelphia Inquirer, in a three-part series. He received such an overwhelming response, and continued to watch Matt recover in the most astonishing ways that he decided to take a leave, immerse himself in Matt’s life, and write this book. THE ROAD BACK is not only about a young man’s drive to reclaim his life, but about the the people who rode with him, rescued him, helped him heal, and saw up close his amazing comeback.
“My mission as a writer has always been to celebrate life, to lift the human spirit when I can. I tried to do that with this book,” said Vitez, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1997 for a series of stories about end of life care.
“One of the things I love best about this book,” said Vitez, “is that this was a kid who had been given everything – an affluent and loving family, a sharp mind, terrific athleticism — and he recognized he’d been given these gifts and felt a responsibility to make the most of them. And when adversity struck, he doubled down, drew from deep within himself, and grew even more determined to fulfill the promise of his life, to make the most of his gifts and this greatest gift, his second chance. In an age of greed and selfishness, especially among many of the wealthy and privileged, I think this is very affirming for readers.”
“Also,” Vitez added, “I have made it my mission as a writer to celebrate life, to look for the good in people, to inspire when I can. And I found so much goodness in this book. This story really is the Perfect Storm in reverse. Everything had to work perfectly for Matt Miller to have any chance of survival — everything — and it did! The emergency responders, the doctors and nurses, his family, the community all delivered flawlessly for Matt. We hear so much negativity in America today, much of it justified, but in this book America shines. I love the family history, showing where Matt got his grit and work ethic. I love his mother’s humility and strength. I love the goodness of the people all around him, from the Harrises to the Vanguard crew to Mark Bernardino. This book is my canvas to paint my view of America, a true and remarkable story.”
Even though Vitez has been a writer and journalist for over 30 years, and won a Pulitzer Prize, and authored a previous and very popular book, Rocky Stories, he received little interest from the major New York publishers. The publishing industry is even in worse shape, and going through more upheaval, than his own newspaper industry. So rather than go with a small, regional publisher, in which he knew from previous experience that he would have to do most of the marketing anyway, he decided to publish the book himself. Technology has changed so much, making this possible. He used CreateSpace, a print-on-demand publisher, to design and print the paperback, which is available at Amazon.com, and Vitez created e-book versions for Kindle, Nook and Ipad.
“This has been a fascinating experience, a great adventure for me, and in a way I feel like a pioneer,” Vitez said.
Many have raved about The Road Back. Here are four short reviews:

Ride Your Way Lean
Bicycle Books – Features
Forget gym memberships and running shoes. The best way to lose weight is on a bike. In Ride Your Way Lean, Bicycling magazine columnist Selene Yeager provides readers with a comprehensive cycling plan that allows them to shed fat, streamline their bodies, and hone their skills on a bike. Cycling is gentle on the joints, easy to do with friends and family, and burns literally thousands of calories without being a bore or cause for suffering.

Bicycle Books – Reviews
Ride Your Way Lean does more than just advocate cycling as a weight loss program: it tells exactly how to use the bicycle to optimize loss, from understanding connections between speed and duration and calorie-burning to selecting the proper bicycle, choosing the gear that will make the most of calorie burning, and eating before and after the ride. A fine survey for any interested in optimizing bicycle use for weight loss!
California Duet
Read through the book and doing some of the plans currently. Thought the book was great for beginning rider to get you a good foundation of riding miles. This is my 1st year riding and while I come from a running background some of the training does differ slightly. I wouldn’t recommend it for an experienced cyclist. Probably too basic for that group.
My only drawback is that some of the weekend workouts may be unrealistic for some unless you have an indoor trainer (I just got one since I love to ride). I would think most with a family could get out on Saturday OR Sunday for a 2+ hour ride but most likely not another 1.5 hour ride on the other day.
You will also want to make sure you get a heart rate monitor too. Since most of us can’t afford a power meter (preferred way of cyclist training) heart rate monitor is the next best thing that you can get for under $100. It will make sure you stay in the proper zone so you get enough rest on your easy rides and work out hard eno
Andrea
With wonderful clarity Selene Yeager tells you how to lose weight while having fun on a bike (okay, the hills are not necessarily fun all the time), fun being important because, if you’re like me, and you choose a form of exercise that’s a drudge or just unpleasant, your resolve will soften along with your waist. This book makes it clear that biking is a highly effective exercise for fitness and weight loss. It’s full of training schedules and nutrition info to take you from tubby to buff. And it’s inspiring. I have highly technical books like “The Cyclist’s Training Manual,” which are informative but charmless. Selene makes you feel like your being coached by a friendly expert who has the goods to get you to whatever level of svelte fitness you’re looking for.

The Valley of Heaven and Hell – Cycling in the Shadow of Marie-Antoinette
Bicycle Books – Features
In her fourth travelogue, Susie and her husband take to their bikes to explore the Marne valley, following in the carriage tracks of Marie-Antoinette and Louis XVI in their abortive escape attempt from the French revolution.
Susie is not a born cyclist, as she discovers within the first five minutes of a journey that will last three weeks. Neither does she look her best in Lycra cycling gear. While her husband whirls along effortlessly, she frequently grinds to a halt and has to be rescued. But the pair keep pedalling, from the glitz of Versailles to the hilly Champagne vineyards, via a hair-raising ride through Paris and through quaint provincial towns and sombre battlefields.
Like the best-selling “Best Foot Forward – a 500-mile walk through hidden France”, and “Travels with Tinkerbelle – 6,000 miles around France in a mechanical wreck”, “The Valley of Heaven and Hell – cycling in the shadow of Marie-Antoinette” is an enjoyable mixture of travel and history, told in Susie’s characteristically light-hearted and self-depreciating style. One for armchair travellers to enjoy, or a good holiday read.
“This book manages to combine history, humor and the best of travel writing all in one.”
“As someone who enjoys reading about travel on foot or bicycle I can say its as good as any I’ve read and is a massively entertaining and satisfying read.”
“When it’s funny it’s laugh-out-loud funny, and when it’s sad it is heart-breaking.”

Bicycle Books – Reviews
I got back into road biking about 3 years ago to lower my blood pressure and get some stress relief. The last two years I ventured into longer rides (50, 65, 100 miles). I could complete the rides, but was feeling … well slow, compared with the other riders. This book has taught me more about my bike and some fundamental skills. The best sections in my mind are those on exercise physiology, training, and nutrition. They quickly gave me some clue how to train, and why certain things were needed. Especially good is that the book is quite small and concise. I could read and get a lot of value from it in the first week.
Kenneth Jordan
If your looking for a book that not only coverers all aspects of road cycling (buying, maintenance, training, riding skills), but also does it in a clear concise method, then this is the book.
As a mountain biker, who just bought my first road bike, I was looking for any and all the information I could find on road cycling. I have read a few magazines and bought one other book, but it did not give me the all the information that I was looking for. After buying this book, I immediately knew that this was the book I was looking for. I not only read it in a few days, but also have been referring back to it, as I have become a more experienced rider.
Everything is covered: from getting “fitted” riding in the rain, the importance of riding to a 90 cadence, group riding, racing tactics, training, to maintaining your bike. It is all here. Highly recommended.
Betty P. Pullings
I am new to road cycling, and this was the perfect book to get me going. It answers many of the questions I was embarrassed to ask others, and is something I keep referring to as I gain more experience. I recommend it to all new cyclists.
