Axiom Streamliner Road DLX Rear Rack Black – Reviews

If you want a rack and don’t have proper mounting holes, this is one of only a few options.

It’s not awesome. There’s very little flexibility in how you mount it, and they don’t ship much mounting hardware for you to adapt it. I wound up using some random plates and bolts I had as spares to make it fit. The slim size is annoying, you can’t carry anything on top.

Only purchase as a last resort if normal racks won’t work for you.

Wow, do I ever dig this bike rack!

This is the perfect solution for road bikes that don’t have the normal attachment points for racks.

I hesitated to get this rack because (1) it looks so skinny, and (2) I was afraid my feet would hit the rack/panniers while riding (my bike is small). It turns out that the skinnyness of the rack is *good* – it keeps the weight (from panniers) distributed as close to the actual bike as possible.

As for concern #2, this bike rack has amazing heal clearance. My feet have at least 4 inches of clearance; and I didn’t even set the panniers as far back as they can go. In fact, the first mechanic who saw the rack (this model is fairly new, and he’d never seen it before) exclaimed at the unusual heal clearance, said most racks are not set quite that far back, and demanded the name of the model so that he could recommend it to others.

Sturdy and handsome, too.

Highly recommended!

A caveat, though: As with all set-ups, definitely buy the rack first and the panniers second. My panniers snapped on to this rack just fine; but probably not everybody’s will.

I owe a vintage 1980′s Motobecane mixte bicycle that I adore, but from time to time finding accessories for it requires a little work. For those in a similar situation, I recommend measuring the distance from the rear rack eyelets to the top of your tire (with or without fenders).

Fit. I’ve been told that most modern rear racks had a clearance of 14″ and one would want the rack to be about 1″ from the top of the wheel and completely level so that there’s no tilt up or down of the rack. I use a leveler, which is cheap and easy to find in a hardware store. Even cheaper is using a bottle of water! My wheel to eyelet distance was about 12.5″ and the Axiom Streamliner Road DLX rack fits extremely well on my bike and feel very secure.

Attachment. This was a really easy rack to install. Personally, I prefer p-clamps to the seat stays, but overall it felt very secure attaching the rack via the supplied hardware. I attached the bottom first, next the long rod to where my brakes would be, and then placed a leveler on top of the rack as I adjusted the two nuts and bolts between the long rod and the rack to make the rack level.

Design notes.
The rack is unique in how it actually sits further back than most racks because of those somewhat ugly wedge-shaped metal parts; it basically kicks back the rack so that panniers are away from your heels while pedaling. This is a nice feature because a lot of panniers need to be set back further so you don’t heel-kick them.

The rack will appear extremely narrow if you’re used to regular racks. As a result, it’s really hard to put much on the top. I miss that feature somewhat, but since I primarily use panniers for bike commuting, it really doesn’t matter now. In fact, the narrow nature of the rack fits the aesthetics of a road bike better and keeps the pannier closer to the center of mass of the bike. I use Axiom’s Town and Country panniers and they work really well with this rack.

Though modern and streamlined-looking, it doesn’t clash with the vintage look of my bike. And it doesn’t look extremely sporty. Axiom neatly puts a discreet logo on the rack. I love the look of the rack so much that even those ugly wedge metal pieces don’t bother me. This is a great rack that’s affordable, good-looking, and strong.
