Axiom Hunter Grocery Bag – Reviews

I bought this to use for running errands with my Trek 7000 hybrid. The bag is a snap to install on the rack. On my first trip, my heel touched the bag a couple of times. The problem was resolved by attaching the bag back further on the rack. There are two plastic inserts that are used to hold the bag open and make it more rigid. Some clear instructions on how to use these inserts would have been good. In use, the bag is capable of holding a bunch of groceries. I love how it folds flat against the bike when not in use.

My only complaint (and it’s a fairly minor one, at that) is that a second handle would make carrying it easier, when off of the bike.

All in all, it’s a great bag. I highly recommend it.

The Axiom Hunter Grocery Bag seems like a decent bag. The meshed front seems less than durable, but it might last as long as the rest of the bag. Frequently, I just ride with the bag hanging from the shoulder strap down my back. With the latter arrangement, the bag tends to slide around one’s side, but it’s manageable. I haven’t tried riding with the bag attached to a rack, yet, but I will when the roads dry from our recent inclement weather.

UPDATE: It’s now May of 2011 and this bag is still holding together well. Frankly, I’m somewhat surprised so I’m upgrading my review to 4 stars. The reader should note, however, that I’ve been carrying the bag around my upper torso and NOT on the bike itself.

I had no problems with heel strikes with this bag. However, it is really flimsy and poorly constructed. On the very first day using it, I had problems with the corners of the bag hitting the spokes, making a horrible noise and shattering a reflector. The bungee cord came undone in about two weeks, which I managed to repair. A week later, the hook holding the bag in place tore off while I was riding, sending my bag into the middle of the road and under the semi behind me. Also when using the bag as a shoulder/messenger bag, which I had to do after recovering it once the truck rolled by, the hooks that latch onto the rack dig into your back in a less than pleasant way. NO GOOD! ALL BAD!!!

Attached with no problem to my rack. The metal top hooks are coated to the are less like to scratch the rack. The lower hook is on an elastic cord to keep the bags from swing away from the rack. The bags are somewhat stiff with the side inserts in place, but the weight limit is pretty low since the outside top of the bag baloons out a fair amount with any load in it (needs a strap from the rack side to prevent this) and the bottom sags down some as well. They are still useful but sure don’t look very elegant when deployed with a load.

These were my first foray into shopping bags for my bike and the price is what attracted me. I think I probably got what I paid for, which means I would not buy these again but instead do some more research and not be afraid to spend more to get something that is better engineered and a lot sturdier.
