Axiom Gatherer Shopper Pannier Set Navy Print – Reviews

I’ve recently gotten in to biking as a way of transportation. Prior to trying these panniers, I used a few different forms of baskets on the back (wood crate, milk crate) in addition to a handlebar basket in front. My bike frame is 18.5 inches with 26 inch tires. My rack is a Bontrager Back Rack II.
First, the bags are just adorable. I have the yellow print. The fabric is super sturdy. I like the inserts in the middle to give it shape. When not in use, you can fold the insert down so that it’s not as big / wide. The panniers are definitely bigger than you think they will be! I can get a change of clothes, lunch, makeup, helmet and toilitries in them. This, of course makes them heavier than you would think.
What don’t I like? I am not a fan of how they attach to the top of the rack with a ‘belt’ like system. I would prefer if that was velcro. If it were raining and the bags were full, there would be no waterproofing protection in that the side flaps do not overlap inside the bag very much. Also, when superful, it’s hard for the snap on the bag to meet to close.
Overall, great quality. Can’t beat the sale price of $33 (selling in my local stores for $70). And, for the little things that bother me, nothing some velcro won’t fix.

Really, the concept with this item is badly flawed. They are very large capacity, which is what I wanted for grocery shopping. But, there is no lateral support to it at all. So, all the things I fill it up with (holds ~50 lbs of food) settles down and makes each compartment more like a sphere. When loaded, the back lower corner swings inward and both rests on my fender stays and bends them, and worst of all– it gets caught in the spokes! It’s really quite worrisome to hear and feel this violent pop every block or so. Less importantly, the flaps don’t close at all when even close to full.
I’m quite dissatisfied with it. I suppose they would work better if they were only partially filled, but then what’s the point of getting ones that are so big in the first place!
