Abus Steel O Chain 685 Bicycle Lock (6mm x 2.5 Feet) – Reviews
This lock is great. It’s flexible and easy to use. I find it to be easier to use than my u-lock. I can’t however, vouch for how tough it actually is against potential bike thefts. It seems a lot better than your average coil lock though.

This lock weighs 28 ounces. The hardened steel chain is much tougher than the cable locks that you usually find in this weight class. Almost any cable lock can be cut through with a cheap pair of wire cutters or tin snips and a little bit of time. No, a 28 ounce chain lock is not nearly as tough as a hardened steel 3-pound (or 6 pound) U-lock. If you don’t mind carrying a 3 pound lock with you everywhere, then that is definitely the way to go. For me, 3 pounds is too much, especially for trips to local restaurants or markets where theft is less likely. This chain lock is also more comfortable to carry in a backpack or messenger bag. It is to short to wear around my waist, though Abus does make a longer version.
Those heavy U-locks are good for places like work or school when you will regularly park your bike for long periods of time and you can probably leave the lock there overnight. But beware of cheap U-locks that are not made from hardened steel. Those may be easier to hack saw through than this chain lock.

This is not the strongest lock on the planet, but for a lightweight lock it is about as strong as you can get for the weight! All thickness of cable locks can be easily cut through with a simple pair hand-held of wire snips a few strands at a time. This tempered chain is not cut-proof, but certainly safer than any cable. There is no visible weak point or flimsy pin that I can see that could be compromised. The entire unit seems as secure as the 6mm links can be. I would not lock my bike late at night or in a bad neighborhood with this, but for a reasonable daily lock that always stays on my bike, and I do not notice, this rocks! I twist it some and wrap it at the base of my seat post and I do not notice it when I ride. The nylon sheathing is kind to my paint and keeps the chain from rattling about. I have a heavy duty 10mm chain that I use with this one if I need more security, but a 5lb. plus lock is not practical to lug around on a normal ride.
